Legislative Districts within the 5th Congressional District

There are 19 House of Delegates Districts and 9 State Senate Districts which lie either wholly or partially in the 5th Congressional District.

House of Delegates Districts: 9, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25, 30, 31, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 65, 75, 88.
State Senate Districts: 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 25.

Flip them!

There are three Legislative Districts seats (two House of Delegates & one State Senate) held by Democrats.  We can and should flip them Republican!

  • House of Delegates District 31 (Fauquier) - held by 1st-term Democrat Elizabeth Guzman.
  • House of Delegates District 57 (Charlottesville, Albemarle) - held by retiring Democrat David Toscano.
  • Nobody filed for GOP candidate for State Senate District 25 (Albemarle, Nelson, etc) - held by Democrat Creigh Deeds.  This seat will stay Democrat.  

Nomination Methods

Out of the 28 Legislative Districts within the 5th Congressional District, 20 of those Legislative District Republican Committees have chosen Primary as their nomination method.*

House of Delegates Legislative District Republican Committees which chose Primary as their nomination method: 9, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 23, 58, 59, 60, 61, & 65.

State Senate Legislative District Republican Committees which chose Primary as their nomination method: 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, & 24.

Eight House of Delegates Legislative Districts - 22, 25, 30, 31, 57, 75, 88 - will NOT have Republican primaries.  

One State Senate Legislative District - the 25th - will NOT have a Republican Primary.

  • 31st House of Delegates Legislative District - Mass Meeting on May 1
    Official Call  NOTE: Candidate filing statement is due by March 25th.  This seat is currently held by Democrat Elizabeth Guzman.
  • 88th House of Delegates Legislative District Party Canvas on April 27, in 4 locations.  Official Call  NOTE: Candidate Pre-file form is due by March 22nd.  This seat is currently held by Republican Mark Cole.


  • 57th House of Delegates Legislative District - Mass Meeting, date to be determined.   This seat is currently held by Democrat David Toscano, and he is retiring.  This is an open seat!

Results

Nomination Winners - GOP Candidates

These people have won their Legislative District's Nomination Election and will run for their General Assembly seat as Republicans in November.

  • Congratulations to Delegate Nick Freitas on becoming the GOP candidate for the 30th House District!  As a result, the Convention scheduled for April 27 has been CANCELED.  See the 30HDC Official Call.

Candidates for GOP Nomination 

These people properly pre-filed as candidates and are running for their Legislative District's GOP nomination.

  • 25th House District  - Three Candidates pre-filed:
        *  Chris Runion from Rockingham
        *  Richard Fox from Albemarle
        *  Marshall Pattie from Augusta
    Nomination will occur at the Party Canvas on April 27.  This seat is currently held by Republican Steve Landes, and he is retiring so it's an open seat! See Official Call & Candidate Pre-file form.
  • 22nd House District  -
    Convention on May 18  Official Call & Candidate Pre-file form     This seat is currently held by Republican Kathy Byron, and she is running again.

Losses

Nobody pre-filed to run for the GOP candidate for these Legislative Districts; so by default these seats will be held by a Democrat.

  • 25th State Senate District - This seat is currently held by Democrat Creigh Deeds and will stay Democrat.  See the Official Call.

Explanation of Legislative District Republican Committees
Each House of Delegates Legislative District and each State Senate Legislative District has a Republican Committee which is responsible for finding and electing a Republican candidate for that seat.  Each Unit Chairman is a member of the House of Delegates and State Senate Legislative Districts Committees of the District in which he resides.  Where a Unit encompasses more than one House of Delegates or State Senate District, the Unit Chairman appoints a representative to the legislative district committee(s) that is (are) not the unit Chairman's residence. 


Important Dates

December —  Each Legislative District Committee (LDC) must meet and elect a LDC Chairman

January 4 — Deadline to provide LDC Chairman contact information to the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV).

Primaries

February 6 — Earliest notice of primary to State Board.

February 26 — Latest notice of primary to State Board.

March 11 — Earliest primary candidate filing

March 28 — Latest primary candidate filing

April 2 — Deadline to certify primary candidates

June 11—Primary
